A standard framework for assessing the documented, measurable and verifiable climate impact of kinetic greenpower projects and programs.
The Quality Kinetic Greenpower Standard™ provides a standardized framework for assessing documented and measurable CO₂ avoidance resulting from converting the kinetic energy of water and wind into electricity and feeding that electricity into the power grid.
QKGS™ assesses the climate impact of feeding green electricity generated from the kinetic energy of natural water and air movements into the grid, with particular focus on avoiding fossil-based electricity generation.
The assessment considers green electricity generation, the annual amount of electricity fed into the grid, efficiency, and the CO₂ intensity of the grid together with the resulting annual CO₂ savings.
Transparency of project data and documentation, professional review of calculations, and prevention of double counting or multiple use are fundamental operating principles of QKGS™.
QKGS™ can be applied to kinetic greenpower projects where green electricity generation, electricity fed into the grid, and the related CO₂ avoidance can be documented with appropriate technological, energy and operational data.
Kinetic energy is converted into electricity, and the green electricity is then fed into the power grid. Based on the CO₂ intensity of grid electricity, the emissions actually avoided by the green electricity can be determined.
QKGS™ therefore assesses not only the electricity generated, but also its documented and conservatively determined climate impact in relation to the CO₂ intensity of the grid.
QKGS™ applies a future-proof methodology for the structured, conservative and verifiable assessment of CO₂ avoidance resulting from kinetic greenpower projects.
Appropriate access to relevant basic data and core project documentation supports verification of the credibility of calculations and assessment.
Project and technological data must be documentable, traceable and suitable for professional review; the project owner is responsible for the validity, integrity and accuracy of input data.
As a quality system, QKGS™ follows continuous improvement and regular review of the assessment process, in line with sustainability objectives and international standardization efforts.
Full technological mapping, assessment of the pre-project state, analysis of input and output energy flows, and preference for long-term results are part of the QKGS™ approach.
The technology description, process flow, inputs, outputs, energy flows, efficiency and CO₂ calculations must be handled using up-to-date variables and professional cross-checking.
The project owner must declare ownership of the CO₂ result and the project, and confirm that the result will not be used multiple times in another system or by another party. Without this declaration, the assessment must fail.
The QKGS™ process leads from mapping kinetic energy and the related technology through electricity generation and grid feed-in to the quantification of annual CO₂ avoidance.
Determination of the kinetic energy arising from the natural movement of water or wind and the energy source applied.
Conversion of kinetic energy into mechanical and electromagnetic energy using a turbine, generator or other appropriate technology.
Determination of the amount and efficiency of generated green electricity and the annual electricity fed into the grid.
Assessment of the CO₂ intensity of grid electricity and the fossil-based electricity generation displaced by green electricity.
Conservatively determined annual CO₂ avoidance may serve as the basis for issuing Quality Kinetic Greenpower Credit™.
The QKGS™ standard also defines the framework for creating Quality Kinetic Greenpower Credit™, or QKGC™.
Under the QKGS™ standard, one carbon credit is a unit corresponding to one metric tonne of CO₂e emissions in the Voluntary Carbon Market. The credit may represent a result associated with the actual avoidance, reduction or sequestration of greenhouse-gas emissions.
For QKGS™, crediting is based on the CO₂e impact of avoided fossil-based electricity generation resulting from kinetic greenpower. The standard calculation model considers annual green electricity generation, grid CO₂ intensity and the related CO₂ avoidance.
The public website presents the purpose, principles and general assessment logic of the Quality Kinetic Greenpower Standard™. The full standard documentation contains the detailed requirements, application and assessment framework, as well as access and terms of use.
The full documentation is intended for organizations and professional stakeholders wishing to use the QKGS™ system for kinetic greenpower project assessment, project development, verification or carbon credit generation. The documentation covers technological mapping, energy flows, CO₂ avoidance calculations, and legal and double-counting prevention requirements.
